Antilogic

Clueless and Belligerent wins again.

Yesterday, she asked to be allowed to walk home from school with her friend, assuring us she'd be home by 4:30. At about 5:30, I was at the store, buying a baseball -- an interesting story of its own, weirdly -- and my phone rang. It was C&B from her friend's phone.

C&B: "I'm not in trouble am I? I'm on my way home right now!"
Me: "Uh, hi [C&B's real name]. Weren't you supposed to be home at 4:30?"
C&B: "I was, but then my friend needed me for something and then her mom wouldn't drive me home and I thought she would drive me home and she didn't so I'm walking home as fast as I can right now."
Me: "Right. Didn't you just get out of trouble for this exact kind of thing?"
C&B: "I know, but my friend really needed me for something."
Me: "Okay, what did your friend 'really need' you for?"
C&B: "I don't know."

I almost threw my phone. Because I was in the store and couldn't lose it on this nonsense in any socially acceptable way, I told her to hurry on home, which apparently she did. Am I the only one that can't make sense out of this kind of thing? Seriously.
